About The Hall
1895 was the year of two big events for the village … the railway arrived at Port Isaac Road and the Temperance Hall on Trewetha Lane was built. To many this large stone building will always be the Temperance Hall but it’s official name is now the Village Hall. It was built by the Port Isaac “Cork Legs” Temperance Society (one of two Temperance Societies in the village and a full history of these and the Hall can be found at www.portisaacheritage.co.uk)
Today our Village Hall is the only community space in Port Isaac. It is pretty much in the centre of the village and has its own small garden with amazing views over the old village, Lobber Point and out to sea.
The Hall is fully licensed – something we all smile about when we are running a busy bar with the old, original Temperance Banners looking down us. What a find these old banners were when, in October 2007, we were having a bit of a clearout underneath the stage and came across two very long wooden boxes. They contained the old ‘Cork Legs’ Band of Hope banners that were paraded in the annual Band of Hope marches, in procession up Fore Street. With the help of a professional seamstress, twelve local ladies and eight months later, the restored banners were installed above the stage. Fast forward to 2019 and to launch the first Port Isaac Shanty Festival, raising money for the Hall, local artist Caroline Cleave involved the whole community in the construction of a new Port Isaac banner that now sits between the old ones.
With full central heating and excellent catering facilities our Hall is the ideal and well-used venue for a variety of village events including dances, concerts, parties, wedding receptions, christening celebrations, meetings and elections etc. It is a comfortable place to meet and also home to the Port Isaac Stay & Play Group, the Port Isaac Gulls (local singers) and the hugely successful Community Cafe. Our Hall can comfortably seat 80 around tables (along with crockery, cutlery and table glasses for 80 guests, 100 in rows and up to 120 standing.
It seems a long while ago now but back in 2001 over the May Bank Holiday we were lucky enough to be visited by the BBC DIY SOS TV programme. An army of villagers worked alongside the TV professionals to ‘makeover’ Port Isaac Village Hall. It was a weekend to remember and a milestone in the Hall’s history.
Since that time work on the Hall has been continuing non-stop and we are constantly fundraising to maintain and improve our Hall to make it the best it can be. In 2020 we built a new side extension to give us a bigger kitchen, new toilets and a new storage room. Our kitchen includes three ovens and a pasty oven, a microwave oven, two 4-ring hobs and two dishwashers. We also have an access lift on the steps up to the Hall.
We continue to serve as an important focal point, supporting community spirit and providing a warm and accessible venue to everyone. Our Hall offers everything you need for your event in a welcoming village setting.
